Purple, Gold and Hues of Autumn

I was about to call this Purple Rain because of all the rain we've been getting and even up to a few minutes before I took pictures this morning it was trying to start raining again!
Gees.... enough! OK I'll stop whining.

Cuisine Kathleen made a challenge to do a tablescape with lots of purple NO ORANGE and it should scream fall or at least say it loudly!  I have to admit I didn't think I could do it but after I sifted through my linens I discovered that I did indeed have some purple that gave me the kickstart I needed.

This black  metal pumpkin is actually a candle holder but I decided to make it into a floral centerpiece.  Purples, browns and ivory made their way into it along with a little scarecrow!

There is a metal candle holder in the center that I applied a styrofoam piece over it and that became the base for my flowers.  I stuffed apples and pears at the bottom to conceal the styrofoam.

I used the same pattern in my last tablescape as shown "here" and I think you'll agree they took on a completely different look here.  The arrangement I made sits on top of the white pedastal and the design works very well with the pattern on the dishes.  I opened my storage closet to look for a candle and saw the pedestals sitting there and had an ah-ha moment. They also help tie in the white from the dishes.  I chose to use the ruffled placemats in an overlapping verticle pattern which made a big impact on the design.

The napkin rings are floral picks from Michael's.  I took off a couple of pieces that were too gaudy and I bent the metal pick in a loop to serve as a napkin ring.  I liked the burlap and the gold in the sunflower ties into the tablecloth.   The little gourds were something new at Michael's.   I felt the bowl needed something so in they went!  The tablecloth is a gold on gold leaf pattern by Now Designs.

The napkins are from Williams Sonoma (clearance) I like to keep an eye on their clearance sales  Once in a while I score! I think I have the colors of a football team here!

Ole' Mr. Sun was bouncing in and out which I thanked him for!

Updated with early evening shot

I look forward to see what everyone came up with- see you at the party!

  1. Liz, it's gorgeous! I don't think I would have been able to come up with a purple tablescape. I love the way you placed the mats, and the china is so pretty. So clever to use those floral picks as napkin rings. They make such a statement on this table. I the pumpkin candle holder filled with flowers is another clever idea. laurie

  5. Liz,
GORGEOUS Purple Autumnal Tablescape, dear friend!!!
We, were on the same page with the purple and gold hues. . .
but I always look for an opportunity to share my heirloom silver,
    thus the switch!!!
    Speaking of switch. . .I love, LOVE, L O V E how you switched
the placemats and overlapped them on your round dining room table.
I may "borrow" your placemat placement in the near future!!!
The bronze (brown) mums in your centerpiece are calling my name!!!
( I recently purchased a new linen hemstitch tablecloth in that exact hue!)
Your stemware is exquisite!!! I adore your "clearance" napkins!!!
This purple and gold tablescape has just the right amount of purple
to add elegance to your amazing tablescape design!!!
    Well done!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  12. You did it! You did it!!! I just had no clue at all what to do, but YOU did it! It looks really great, Liz! The gold color along with the white of the dishes helps to keep the table from getting too deep in the dark. The contrast is really effective. I really love the riser you used, too. Not only does it add a little grandeur to the centerpiece, but it brings in a little more of that necessary lighter color.

You did a really, really good job with mixing patterns. It can get a little ho-hum sometimes when a single pattern is used. For fall decorating, though, it really ups the ante when you effectively mix patterns like you did.

I'm glad the sun finally decided to cooperate!

  13. Beautiful table Liz!! You have met the challenge with flying colors. I love the use of the white pedestal and the white patterned dishes. They really do bring a nice light contrast to the purple and gold (I wish I had used some lighter colors now). The centerpiece is especially pretty as are the napkins and placemats. I had a lot of problems with the sunlight participating (or mostly not participating) while I took pictures off and on for three days. I did end up changing a lot of the tablescape anyway. Your table seems to have a wonderful balance of light to dark. Very pretty..... Candy

  14. Gorgeous table, Liz! The purple against the gold is very striking. Great napkin rings...I never think to look at floral picks as something other than their intended purpose...maybe next time I will! Love your centerpiece.
    Have a wonderful week.

  18. Somehow I missed Kathleen's post about the challenge - or forgot about it once I knew the theme. I have no purple, so that puts me out. Anyway, your table is gorgeous! I love the dishes you used with your purple place mats and highlights. You did such a nice job, rain and all!
    Blessings~

  25. Beautiful job, Liz! I love all the pretty purples and yes, it does say Fall. Thanks for taking the challenge. I don't know, so many people email me and say they like it, and then I read comments like too bad you couldn't use orange! Grr... the point of the challenge is to do something different, and you met it grandly.
