January's After Christmas Mantel

I've noticed that one sentiment shared among all the blogger's is that after taking down the Christmas decorating the house feels naked and there is a desire to keep things simple and uncluttered. I feel the same way and my fireplace mantel is going to stay simple and scaled back for a while.
I've been using a pair of tall French pedestal urns on the mantel for a while but I needed a change.

I found these gold quatrefoil hurricane candle holders at Pier 1.  I am particularly fond of that design so I was pleased when I saw them.

It's early morning a a mighty cold one at that(7 deg).  I should have turned on the fireplace for the picture but it didn't occur to me soon enough.

I have moved the sofa back on an angle and put the recliners back in the corner.   The windows have pleated shades that are very thermal and help keep the room warmer.  They have the "top down-bottom up" option which helps for privacy for us.  I can lower the shade from the top down half way and keep privacy and let light in.  You can see the "blue hour" is occurring through the windows.

I'll have to take some pictures in the daylight.  This arrangement has some pinkish/red floral branches that don't show up in this lighting and some off white roses and ranunculus in it. In keeping with the mood of these pictures I'll just show it this way for now!

Happy weekend everybody!

  1. I like the moody look of the photos, especially the blue light outside. My mantel? I decided to keep the bronzy-gold pinecone branches and gold candles. A little sparkle but not Christmasy, and it seems to make the LR look less dreary in these cold days and nights. It was around zero at night for the last couple of night, and we still have two more really cold days and nights before it warms up a little. I am just hoping my jasmines didn't get killed again.

  4. Hi Liz, your room is beautiful and cozy. I love the arrangement and angle of your sofa. The mantel is perfectly peaceful for the after Christmas declutter. Love it. I also really love your up or down shades on the windows and have been thinking of adding these to my dining room which faces the front of the house and we like the privacy at least half way down when at the table.
    Have a great weekend.
    Hugs

Such a warm soft glow and even though it is cold outside I would never know it by the warmth of your home. Beautiful arrangement on your mantle.

  8. I hope you are keeping warm, Liz! It is frigid here, too. You've decorated your mantel nice and simple after the holidays. I always feel like I need to keep things to a minimum after the Christmas décor has been put away. I kept our mantel simple, too, leaving out a couple of framed pictures I normally have on it. I will bring them back in (maybe with some updated pictures) after Valentine's Day. It's nice to change things up a little sometimes.

  10. How pretty and cozy,Liz! We have been in the 30's for the past few days. No wintry stuff, though! I love being indoors on cloudy, cold days like these, cozied up to the fireplace. Your photos set the mood so perfectly!

  12. I am starting the putting away party on Monday -- the hubs and I did some kitchen sorting today and that was important after all the pots and pans that were used during the holidays. I love your candle holders!

    Mesmerizing photos!!!
I adore the home when all are still in bed and I have those few "quiet" moments to myself.
